I've read this book out loud to pre-schoolers at library storytimes, to kindergarteners and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders in their classrooms, with great success -- without fail, children love this book, as do I. Eventually, as we find out, she learns how to grow her own balloons, just differently. The narrator does not speak Standard American English, she speaks a different dialect. That is appropriate, given the setting. At any rate, I think it's important for children to learn that not everybody will speak the way they do. We had previously bought the playhouse, and my 2 year old loved it so much, we bought this one too. My only suggestion is to laminate or tape up (with clear packing tape) the Maisy, Cyril, Tallulah, and Charley since they get worn out very easily. I know Maisy's arms don't move then, but my daughter didn't seem to mind. Otherwise, this will provide hours of fun! ...more

This book opens out to form a pop up farm scene - complete with vegetable garden, barn, stables etc. All the peices that you use to tell your own story need to pressed out of a thin card before you start, but there are lots of surprised hidden amongst the walls of the pop-up to discover for yourself.
